Video encoding scheme where the reference macroblock for INTER coding is changed in response to an error signal from the receiving decoder

A video encoder comparatively encodes input video data with a decoded version of previously encoded video data using motion compensation and difference techniques. The decoded-encoded data is stored as macroblocks in buffers. An input video data macroblock is initially INTER coded with respect to the data in a first buffer and transmitted to the decoder/receiver. When an error occurs in decoding the receiver/decoder returns a message requesting either that macroblocks be INTRA coded without reference to other macroblocks or that macroblocks be INTER coded with respect to a different buffer from that in which the error occured, possibly with respect to a corresponding macroblock from an earlier frame. The receiver/decoder may specify which macroblock it would like blocks encoded with respect to. In the event that the specified macroblock or all macroblocks have an error associated with them the encoder may INTRA code a frame instead.
