PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically set optimum fusing temperature by controlling the temperature of a fusion unit based on the surface roughness of a printing medium. ;SOLUTION: A contact 16 (or 18) is brought into contact with the surface 6 (or 8) of the medium 2 and the vibration thereof is detected by an acoustic detection device 22 or a vibration detection device 24. The higher fusing temperature is required as the surface roughness is larger. However, since the amplitude of the detected result of the vibration by this contact becomes large according to the roughness, the temperature of the fusion unit 10 can be controlled so as to become a proper value by giving the detected result to a fusing temperature selector 26 and a fusing temperature controller 14.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
