PURPOSE: To eliminate large axial load and reduce unnecessary abrasion and efficiency loss by providing a seal engaging with a pressure plate secured on another scroll member and surrounding a pressure chamber to bias the pressure plate from a scroll element by means of the fluid pressure of the pressure chamber. ;CONSTITUTION: A drive scroll member 76 rotated by a motor received in a sealed case via a drive shaft 84, and an idler scroll member 78 engaged with the above member is received in a lower portion of the sealed case. A stub shaft 104 protruding from an end plate 102 to the side of an opposing scroll wrap 100 is arranged on the idler scroll member 78 and borne by an annular bearing 110. A plane shaped pressure plate 140 secured on an extension 120 by a fastener 126, and a pressure chamber 150 defined by inner and outer circular walls 152, 154 are arranged in the position adjacent to the rear portion 106 of the idler scroll member 78.
