PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-performance building material provided with moisture conditioning properties, which is excellent concurrently in moisture absorption/release property, fire resistance and fire-proof property, and also has soil-proof properties, deodorization properties, organic matter decomposition properties and antimicrobial properties, due to photocatalytic action, and also to provide a production process of the building material. SOLUTION: The production process of this building material comprises: adding diatomaceous earth having 2-100 m grain size to an inorganic base mix in an amount sufficient to provide a 5-30 wt.% ratio of the diatomaceous earth to the total weight of all the components of the resulting mix; forming the resulting mix into an inorganic base material; and depositing photocatalyst particles on at least one face of the formed inorganic base material so that a part of the photocatalyst particles are exposed to the outside air; wherein more specifically, in order to deposit the photocatalyst particles on the surface of the formed inorganic base material so that a part of the photocatalyst particles are exposed to the outside air, the photocatalyst particles are transferred to the surface of the formed inorganic base material immediately after the forming and then, the resulting inorganic base material is subjected to press-forming with an embossing roll whose surface is smooth or provided with a recessed and projecting pattern having a desired shape and thereafter, the press-formed base material is dried.
