In the process for the optimal control of the mass transfer zone of distillation columns with the aid their characteristic diagrams, which are pressure- and heating steam-dependent, the temperature is measured at two different plates in the mass transfer zone of the column. The measured values are compared with one of the characteristic curves of the characteristic diagrams, which depict the desired values of the temperature and the distance of the points of installation of the thermometers in the column. The deviation from the desired value of the distance of the point of installation of the thermometers is utilised for the control of the steam feed and of the reflux or of the pressure. IMAGE
