PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a porous catalyst layer of an arbitrary thickness even on metals having high heat resistance and to form a catalyst layer which ensures high activity and does not peel even at high temperature.;SOLUTION: Carbon particles coated with a catalyst or a catalyst carrier are thermally sprayed on a metallic plate and the carbon in the resulting spray deposit is removed by burning to form a porous catalyst layer or a porous catalyst carrier layer. A catalyst is supported on the porous carrier layer by a method such as dipping, ion exchange or deposition precipitation. A mixture of an acid- or alkali-soluble material with an insoluble carrier material or an alloy of a catalyst metal and aluminum is used as catalyst particles or carrier particles to be thermally sprayed, and after burning the carbon in the spray deposit, acid or alkali treatment is carried out to form micropores.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2002,JPO
