PURPOSE:To easily form the end surface to be adhered to an optical element by forming a metallic coating layer by a metallizing treatment on a part of the other parts exclusive of the terminal part of the exposed part of a bare optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:A protective coating layer 13 at a front end 12 of an optical fiber 11 is removed to expose the bare optical fiber 14. The coating layer 13 consists of a primary coating layer 15 coating the surface of the bare optical fiber 14 and a secondary coating layer 16 coating the surface thereof. The terminal part 17 at the exposed front end 13 of the bare optical fiber 14 is completely exposed without being coated and the part 19 adjacent to the end face 18 of the residual coating layer 13 is subjected to the surface metallizing treatment, to form the metallic coating layer 20. As a result, the metallic coating layer is not formed on the end face of the bare optical fiber and, therefore, the adhesive end face can be, formed by a prescribed method and the optical fiber can be directly adhered to the optical element.
