PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a structured document retrieval system/method processing a composite inquiry containing the document structure condition of a structured document and the adapted condition of a character string. ;SOLUTION: A document element ID, a master document element ID containing the document element and an original structured document ID are added to the text of the document element as texts. A whole sentence index generation means 132 generates a whole sentence index. When the adapted condition of the character string and a condition on document structure are contained in an inquiry, retrieval is executed by a whole sentence retrieval execution means 131. When only the condition of document structure is contained, a structure condition judgement means 116 executes retrieval by using only information of a document parts storage part. When the number of condition retrieval results of a part of the composite inquiry is considerably small, a document element condition judgment means judges all the other unprocessed conditions at once with all document elements relating to the document element obtained as the result of retrieval as objects.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
