PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sizing agent which is used for making paper and has an excellent sizing effect, low foamability and excellent stability with the passage of time in a paper-making region of pH 5.5 to 9. ;SOLUTION: This sizing agent for making paper comprises (A) a rosin-based substance, (B) an emulsion dispersant, and water. The rosin-based substance A comprises a resin mixture of (A-2) a reinforced rosin with (A-1) a rosin ester obtained by the thermal reaction of (a) an alkenyl-substituted succinic acid, (b) a rosin and (c) a polyhydric alcohol, or (A-3) a reinforced rosin ester obtained by the thermal reaction of (c) the component and (d) an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid. The emulsion dispersant B comprises the aqueous dispersion of an anionic polymer obtained by the polymerization of (b-2) the monomer mixture of (1) a hydrophobic vinyl monomer with (2) an anionic vinyl monomer in the presence of (b-1) a rosin dispersant.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
