PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing high purity cementite Fe3C, by which the cementite can be produced in large quantities at a low cost being sufficiently practical, and to provide a new cementite type compound having a structure expressed by (Fe1-xMx)3C and a method of producing the same.;SOLUTION: The cementite Fe3C is produced by blending Fe and C in an atomic ratio of Fe to C of about 75:25, then uniformly mixing the two components by a mechanical alloying method to obtain an alloy precursor and heat treating the powder of the alloy precursor at 350 to 500°C. It is possible to obtain a cementite type compound expressed by (Fe1-xM'x)3, wherein M' is one or more selected from Na, K, Ca, Mg, Cr, Mn, Co, Mo, V, Ti, Ni, Al and Si and x is 0 and 1, by substituting a portion of Fe with another component M, e.g. a representative metal component M'.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2002,JPO
