PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To distribute enhanced and unenhanced digital medical images in accordance with the processing function of an image request system. SOLUTION: When the processing function of the image request system includes enhancing processing, an image server retrieves an unenhanced digital medical image from an image archive and transmits the retrieved image to the image request system (step 210). When the processing function of the image request system does not include the enhancing processing, the image server retrieves an unenhanced digital medical image from the image archive, applies image enhancement to the retrieved image to prepare an enhanced digital medical image (step 211) and transmits the enhanced digital medical image to the image request system (step 212).
