PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically estimate that an information code exists in an area to be read with high probability by making it unnecessary to provide any illuminating light for reading.;SOLUTION: A stationary information code reading apparatus 1 is provided with a number of bright/dark point memory 14b for storing the change of bright points and dark points when scanning for each area to be checked for one picture area and a memory 17 for storing bright/dark points for storing the data for one picture area. The data stored in the number of bright/dark point memory 14b for one picture area are transferred to the memory 17 for storing the bright/dark pints. Then, data for one picture area are stored in the number of bright/dark point memory 14b again, and the contents of the number of bright/dark point memory 14b are compared with the contents of the memory 17 for storing the bright/dark points for each area to be examined by a control circuit 8. When the number of areas to be examined where the number of bright and dark points whose change is generated between adjacent pixels exceeds the prescribed number of points to be judged becomes more than the number of areas to be judged, it is estimated that an information code exists in the area to be read with high probability.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2002,JPO
