PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently manufacture a synthetic gas by securing a catalyst for generating the synthetic gas at a high selectivity in a decomposing reaction of methanol by a method wherein a catalyst comprises a composite metallic oxide containing cerium, palladium and zirconium, and the palladium is allowed to exist as palladium oxide or the like. ;SOLUTION: A catalyst for manufacture of a synthetic gas is composed of a hydrogen treated material of a composite metallic oxide containing cerium, palladium and zirconium represented by the formula: Ce1-x-yPdxZryO2-x.mH2O (in the formula, (x) represents a number of 0.05-0.7, (y) represents a number of 0.05-0.8, x+y represents a number of under 1 and (m) represents a number of 0-10). At that time the palladium is allowed to exist as a palladium oxide or a metallic palladium. Then, the catalyst is used in a method for manufacture of a synthetic gas by a decomposing reaction of methanol. Thereby, the methanol can be decomposed into the synthetic gas (CO+H2) at a low reaction temperature and at a high selectivity.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
