PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method for detecting a broken portion of a water barrier sheet in a waste disposal field and a detecting apparatus for executing the method where water barrier sheets are laid on a depression of ground and wastes are thrown and deposited thereon. ;SOLUTION: A water barrier sheet 1 formed in a double structure is divided into blocks A1-C2 having sizes and shapes suited for broken portions to be detected and each block A1-C2 is independently formed as a water-tight and elementally insulated cell with insulation barriers between the water barrier sheets 1. A ground electrode is disposed at least on the top of the water barrier sheet 1, and a plurality of detecting electrodes are disposed parallel in each cell forming the block A1-C2. A current is fed between the detecting electrode of each block A1-C2 and the ground electrode to detect whether or not a broken portion of the water barrier sheet 1 exists by unit of block and, if any block has a broken portion of the water barrier sheet 1, a current is fed to the detecting electrode in the cell thereof to locate the broken portion on a plane coordinate system.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
