PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device capable of eliminating black smoke exhausted from a diesel engine which uses fuel containing sulfur.;SOLUTION: An oxidizing catalyst 2 composed chiefly of cobalt or a zinc- containing chromium oxide (Cr2O3) and containing at least one white metal selected from the group consisting of Pt, Rh, Pd, Ir, and Ru is disposed in the front stage of the device and a reducing catalyst filter 4 having a catalyst formed by a combination of an oxide of at least one element selected from the group consisting of titanium, vanadium, zinc, calcium and strontium and at least one lanthanide selected from the group consisting of La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm is disposed in the rear stage of the device.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2002,JPO
