PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new cholesteryl compound preferable for the use in a heat-sensitive recording medium or a liquid crystal display element, and further to provide a method for producing the compound and the liquid crystal composition containing the compound.;SOLUTION: This new cholesteryl compound is represented by general formula (1) [wherein, Y1 is an alkyl group or aralkyl group, having a group including an asymmetric carbon represented by general formula (2), wherein, R1, R2 and R3 are each an alkyl group, an alkoxy group, an aryl group or an aralkyl group, with the proviso that each thereof is not the same as each other; and C* is an asymmetric carbon; X1 is a linking group for linking a cholesteryl group to Y1, represented by formulas (3-1) to (3-4)].
