PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently detect a scene change point from compressed data of a video.;SOLUTION: The bit stream of compressed data in MPEG 2 is scanned without decoding it. A difference between a coefficient value (total value of values based on encoding DCT(discrete cosine transformation) coefficient included in respective clocks constituting an I picture) with respect to the I picture appearing in the bit stream and a coefficient value with respect to the I picture positioned just before the I picture concerned on a time axis is obtained. When the absolute value of the difference exceeds a prescribed threshold, time shown by the picture number of the I picture positioned backward on the time axis in the two I pictures and by the time code of GOP(Group Of Pictures) including the I picture is detected as a scene change point.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2002,JPO
