PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a code book generating method for vector quantization that can obtain an optimum layout of representative vectors to minimize average distortion for generating a code book for vector quantization.;SOLUTION: A received vector set is coded into corresponding representative vectors on the basis of a code book (F12), the gravity center of the obtained representative vectors is calculated, the average distortion is calculated and partial distortion is calculated (F13), the representative vectors and the partial distortions are sorted on the basis of the obtained partial distortions (F15), sorted partial distortions in the ascending order and the descending order are compared (F16), the representative vectors with small partial distortion are moved in the vicinity of the representative vectors with large distortion on the basis of the result of comparison to update the code book (F17).;COPYRIGHT: (C)2002,JPO
