SOLUTION: A combustion condition detection part 2 is provided with sensors to detect combustion conditions, detects a first parameter correlating to the knocking strength and detects a second parameter correlating to the stability of combustion. An ECU 3 is provided with a first autoignition limit determining part 9 for determining whether it is possible to continue autoignition combustion based on the first parameter, a a second autoignition limit determining part 10 for determining whether it is possible to continue autoignition combustion based on the second parameter, and a combustion pattern determining part 5 for switching combustion styles from autoignition to spark ignition, when the autoignition limit determining parts 9, 10 have determined that it is not possible to continue autoignition combustion.
