PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an interpolation system and an interpolating method capable of maintaining the definition of a text and a graphic image without a distortion of contour form or an overlap noise when an image is expanded. SOLUTION: This system is provided with a contour detecting part, a contour direction changing part, a contour neighborhood coefficient generating part, a filter coefficient generating part and a nonlinear interpolating part, detects the contour information of an input video signal, deforms the detected contour information with the center point among peripheral pixels with respect to an interpolation position as reference, generates an interpolation position transformed by performing coordinate transformation of the interpolation position with the deformed contour information and generates a contour pattern corresponding to the transformed interpolation position. A one-dimensional nonlinear interpolation filter coefficient is generated in response to the contour pattern, a preliminarily set one-dimensional filter coefficient and transformed interpolation position coordinates, a plurality of two-dimensional nonlinear interpolation coefficients are generated in response to a prescribed one-dimensional nonlinear interpolation filer, and interpolation is performed in the neighborhood of a contour by multiplying the plurality of two-dimensional nonlinear interpolation coefficients by the data value of the respective peripheral pixels.
