PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reading device, a reading method, a sorting device and a sorting method that can prevent an erroneous recognition.;SOLUTION: The reading device 106 is provided with a reading part 10 for reading name/address information written on mail, a city/ward/district name recognition module 17 and an address recognition module 19 for recognizing address information (first category information) included in the name/address information read by the reading part, an answer compilation module 24 for supplementing seven-digit zip code information (second category information) according to the recognized address information, and a control module 11 controls so as to prohibit supplement of the seven-digit zip code information if the recognized address information is a special address type.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2002,JPO
