PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To subject a waste paper having cellulose as a main ingredient such as an old newspaper to the chlorination of a carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC) and to obtain a practical CMC salt.;SOLUTION: The method for producing the CMC salt comprises the reaction of the waste paper with an alkali in a water-containing organic solvent to produce an alkali cellulose and its etherification by adding an etherification agent. The solvent comprises an organic solvent of 60-90 wt.% and water of 10-40 wt.%. The used amount is 2.5-10 times of cellulose contained in the paper by weight ratio and the water content is 8-20 times of glucose unit amount of cellulose contained in the paper by mole ratio.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2002,JPO
