PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spin valve type thin-film magnetic element which can prevent the occurrence of a side reading while an output characteristic is being improved.;SOLUTION: The spin valve type thin film magnetic element 1 consisting of a laminated material 9 provided with a free magnetic layer 7 and a fixed magnetic layer 5, a pair of hard bias layers 32, 32 which align the magnetic moment of the free magnetic layer 7 into one direction, a pair of insulation films 33, 33 extending from the surfaces of the hard bias layers 32, 32 to both end parts 9a, 9a of the laminated material 9 in the track width directions and a pair of lead layers 34, 34 laminated on the hard bias layers 32, 32 through the insulation films 33, 33, which is characterized in that the lead layers 34, 34 are equipped with overlay parts 34a, 34a respectively each of which is extending partially to the surface of the laminated material 9 and that tip parts 34b, 34b of the overlay parts 34a, 34a extend further than the insulation films 33, 33 to a central side of the laminated material 9 and join with the laminated material 9, is adopted.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2002,JPO
