PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rare earth borocarbide containing a carbon which is useful as a highly functional material, for example, a thermoelectric element material, spectral element material and luminescence material.;SOLUTION: This rare earth borocarbide has a rhombohedral crystal structure, and is represented by a chemical formula, RE1-xB28.5C4-y (wherein, RE is one among Sc, Y, Ho, Er, Tm, Lu; 0≤x≤0.4; and -1≤y≤2). The borocarbide is manufactured by adding boron, carbon or their compounds to a rare earth polyboride represented by REB2, REB4, REB6 or REB12, as a raw material so that the composition of the products becomes RE1-xB28.5C4-y, and heating and reacting at 1600-1900°C in vacuo and Ar or a neutral atmosphere.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2002,JPO
