The present invention relates to the preparation of compositions and/or ferroelectric ceramic materials having niobate anions in combination with lead, barium, lanthanum, and bismuth cations. In preferred embodiments, the compositions comprised the formula Pb(x−3y/2−3z/2)Ba(1−x)LayBizNb2O6, wherein x is from about 0.4 to about 0.6, y is from about 0.01 to about 0.03, and z is from about 0.01 to about 0.03. The compositions may be easily poled, and have unexpectedly high piezoelectric charge coefficients and unexpectedly high dielectric constants. The invention also provides processes for preparing the compositions, ferroelectric ceramic materials, and articles comprising the ferroelectric ceramic materials.
