Non-exothermic quasi-two level laser

A method for selecting laser and pump frequencies for a quasi-two level solid state laser with a selected laser host and operating the laser with the selected laser and pump frequencies, the host having a fluorescence probablility P(&ngr;) over a frequency range from &ngr;_i to &ngr;_f, has the steps: (a) determining for the laser host, a power weighted average fluorescence frequency &ngr;_F given by $\mathop{\mathrm{image}}$ \⟨v_F\⟩=\frac{1}{\left(v_f-v_i\right)}\⁢{\∫}_{v_i}^{v_f}\⁢v\·P\⁡\left(v\right)\⁢\text{\ }\⁢\ⅆv;$$;(b) selecting an output frequency &ngr;_L for the quasi-two level solid state laser to satisfy the expression &ngr;_L&ngr;_F, and tuning the laser for laser emission at the &ngr;_L; and (c) selecting a pump frequency &ngr;_P for the quasi-two level solid state laser to satisfy the expression &ngr;_L&ngr;_P&ngr;_F, and optically pumping the laser host with a laser pump to produce laser emission at the &ngr;_L. This invention will provide athermal laser operation.
