The present invention relates to a device that is used to receive the axial thrust of a multistage centrifugal pump, which comprises a compensation device that has one or more axial grooves and one or more radial grooves, in which a flow of compensation is directed through said grooves. The device of the present invention also comprises an axial bearing that receives the remaining thrust. Cardanic rings are associated with axial bearings and are used to balance alignment errors. The compensation device of the present invention is highly reliable and subject only to small leakage losses. This is achieved by configuring the compensation device in such a way that a remaining thrust occurs in all operating conditions, in which said thrust acts in the direction of the suction side of the centrifugal pump and the cardanic ring (10) is dimensioned in order to be elastically deformed by the remaining thrust, and the spring constant of the cardanic ring (10) has characteristics such that the axial groove (s) can close, moving from a maximum groove width (s), when the centrifugal pump is in a non-operating position, up to a minimum width during operating conditions, in order to avoid contact with the surfaces that define, respectively, one of these axial grooves (8).
