Invention Patent: "COMPLEXES OF WATER SOLUBLE OPTICAL BRIGHTENERS AND QUATERNARY AMMONIUM COMPOUNDS THAT ARE SUBSTANTIALLY FREE OF UNDESIRABLE SALTS". This invention relates to water-soluble optical brightener complexes and to quaternary ammonium compounds that are substantially free of unwanted salts. Such complexes are formed by means of ionic bonds formed between the two compounds. The inventive complexes are then removed from substantially all excess unwanted salt in order to obtain an optical brightening compound that easily solubilizes in, dispenses with, and exhibits excellent compatibility with standard detergent and softener compositions, which exhibit the desired degree of affinity with various substrate surfaces, including textiles, paper, wood and plastics, as well as leak detection formulations, which provide a desired build-up effect on the substrate surfaces in repeated treatments. Such inventive complexes can also be used for thermoplastics and bleach thermosets. In addition, this invention also concerns methods of preparing and using such inventive optical brightening complexes.
