According to the present invention, a process is provided for the treatment of vulcanized rubber comprising the steps of: providing a solution of sulfur in a fatty acid or ester or salt thereof, mixing the solution with vulcanized rubber in particles, and heating the mixture for a period of time and temperature and pressure sufficient to substantially devulcanize the rubber.
