In the present invention there is disclosed a process for obtaining a liquid extract of shark cartilage, which process is characterized in that it comprises the following steps: a) homogenizing pieces of solid shark cartilage in a non-denaturing aqueous solution until said pieces of solid shark cartilage are reduced to solid particles whose size is lower than or equal to about 500 micrometers, resulting in a mixture of said solid particles and a crude liquid extract; b) separating said crude liquid extract from said solid particles; and c) further separating the crude liquid extract so as to obtain a final liquid extract containing cartilage molecules having a molecular weight lower than or equal to 500 000. The invention also relates to a cartilage extract being prepared by the above-described process, further compositions for treating dermatological disorders or diseases, containing a therapeutically effective amount of the cartilage extract in connection with a pharmaceutically acceptable vehicle. The invention further relates to a topic composition for treating psoriasis or acne as well as composition for treating cancer.
