The present invention relates to a method of slowing or normalizing the rate of cell growth, in particular malignant cell growth, using an effective amount of a portion of an asindecane-1-ectodomain. The invention also relates to pharmaceutical compositions comprising proteins comprising a syndecan ectodomain. The methods and compositions of the present invention promote the normalization of the growth rate and differentiation status of malignant cells. ŕ
