A process for praring aqueous ophthalaldehyde glutaraldehyde solution

pPreparation of an aqueous solution of o-phthalaldehyde (OPA) and-glutaraldehyde (GA) comprises converting an acetal of OPA in a 10-60% aqueous GA solution to OPA by eliminating the corresponding alcohol at room temperature to 100 degrees C and removing the alcohol. Preferably the acetal is a tetraalkyl-acetal or a dialkoxyphthalan with 1-4C atoms in each alkoxy group. A 30-55 wt.% aqueous GA solution is used. The acetal is added in an amount giving an OPA content of 1-30, especially 1-10 wt.% in the aqueous GA solution. Reaction is carried out at normal pressure to 300 mbar, especially normal pressure to 200 mbar.
