Optical system for monitoring operating conditions in tuyere zone of blast furnace has sight glass for visual monitoring and optical sensor with translucent deflecting element in path of light emerging from sight glass
The optical monitoring system comprises a sight glass (28) through a hot blast blow pipe (16) which is axially aligned with the blow pipe (16) to allow viewing through the blow pipe. An optical sensor (36), preferably an image scanning device or a device measuring light in a particular spectral range, is laterally arranged with respect to the path of the light coming out of the blow pipe. A translucent deflecting element (38), preferably a glass plate having two degrees of freedom, in the path of the light coming out of the blow pipe (16) between the sight glass (28) and the blow pipe (16) is used to deflect some of the light onto the optical sensor (36) while still allowing sufficient light to pass axially through to enable visual monitoring through the sight glass (28). A device (42) is arranged in the path of the deflected light beam for focussing the light onto the detector.
