The verification device (1) comprises a device (2) for generating a digital image of the marked article, a computer (4) connected to this digital image generating device, and an indicator device (5) connected to the computer for confirming authenticity of the marked article. The computer includes software with an input portion for loading the scanned image into memory, a selection part for selecting at least one first scanned image fragment containing the marking, and a conversion portion for converting the first fragment into a second fragment, from which the marking can be made visible. Independent claims are also included for (1) a second electronic verification device comprising a device for generating a digital image of the marked article, a computer connected to the digital image generating device for converting a first scanned image fragment into a second fragment in which the marking is visible to the human eye, (2) a verification method using this device, (3) software used to carry out either verification method, and (4) a data medium containing this software.
