The castor device (1) comprises a ball (4) supported against and secured to an inner tube (5) which can be slid up and down in a vertical direction inside an outer tube (6), the latter being secured to the underside of the e.g. leg or stand. Movement of the inner tube is carried out using a mechanical arrangement. The castor device material has a high bend strength and dimensional stability (e.g. metal or certain plastics). The bottom side of the outer tube provides a large contact surface (13) with the floor. The castor device is fitted to the underside of a leg or stand of e.g. a table on which e.g. a bread cutting machine, meat cutting machine or meat slicing machine is placed, a work bench in an abattoir, hotel, restaurant, caf or bar, office furniture, hospital beds or medical equipment tables. The ball is normally extended when the castor device is in use, e.g. for moving the table for cleaning work.
