The resulting quality level is compared with a pre-determined standard quality level and a decision is made to carry out pre-determined maintenance work measures if a given maximum differential between the actual and standard quality levels is exceeded. An independent claim is also included for the measuring carriage used to carry out the above monitoring method, provided with sensors (8) for measuring at least one parameter chosen from track width, tilt, groove width, vertical orientation and horizontal orientation,.
