Measurement data from the track is used to calculate at least one of the quality figures Q5, Qcp and Qj defined by the following equations : Q5 = (1-0.1 x Qg) x (1-0.1 x Qc) x (1-0.1 x Qt) x (1-0.1 x Qv) x (1-0.1 x Qh) x 10 ; Qcp = (Npcp/Nmcp) x 10 ; and Qj = (0.5 x Sg + St + Sv + Sh) x 10/3.5 c Rj, the value for which can optionally be combined with the outcome of one or more of the following formulae : Qv = L - [(D x F)/F] x L DI = D x F W = [DI/F] x L Qv = L - W, and delta Q i = delta W i = F i/(F + delta F i) x L. The resulting quality level is compared with a pre-determined standard quality level and a decision is made to carry out pre-determined maintenance work measures if a given maximum differential between the actual and standard quality levels is exceeded.
