The formation of a tantalum coating of controlled roughness on a metallic base, to provide a suitable surface for the subsequent deposition of iridium oxide, comprises thermal decomposition of iridium tetrachloride (IrCl4) on the tantalum surface. IrCl4 is applied in an octanol solution on to the tantalum substrate and thermal decomposition is effected in a controlled oxidizing atmosphere.
