The invention relates to a process for non-destructive inspection of butt welds and by electrofusion in polyethylene pipes or of other thermoplastic materials, meant for the detection of structural defects of pipes building up a gas or water-distribution system. According to the invention, the process consists in irradiating the ends of some polyethylene pipes with a relatively low energy emitted by a source Se-75, so that an emergent beam, carrying information about the structure formed by welding, meet a radiographic film, which after being developed materializes said information by the variation of the blacking some quality indicators of a roentgenographic image are radiographed simultaneously with the welding, said roentgenographic images containing some standard defects playing a calibration role in achieving a previously prescribed sensitivity in some auxiliary tables. The time of irradiation with respect to the thickness of the material in mm, is determined in order to produce a suitable image.
