The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for measuring the deviations from smoothness of the surfaces, meant especially for metal plates exceeding standard size, employed in the ship building, machine building etc. The method consists first in laying two tanks of the same height, communicating through a flexible conduit, on the surface to be measured. In one of the tanks, one pours water which also flows into the second tank and after 10...15 min. required for the stabilization of the level in both tanks, one measures the distance between the level of the water and the upper edge of each tank successively, the difference showing the size of the deviation from smoothness of the surface. The apparatus for applying the method comprises a feeler (A) provided with a dial gauge (3) which by means of a magnetic support (21) is laid on the upper plane surface (c) of one of the tank devices (B) and (C). The tank devices (B and C) comprise a prism-shaped body (22) with an enclosure (d) therein, said enclosure communicating with a connection hose (23) on which the ends of some flexible conduit (1) are mounted.
