The sawing machine has a portal structure (11) with hollow vertical assemblies (11.1) each having an internal slide. One slide carries a driven pulley (16.1), the other carries an idle pulley. A further internal slide in each upright carries an idle pulley positioned by a double acting pneumatic control jack for tensioning the cutting wire (21) which is arranged around the four pulleys (16). The motor and gear drive is incorporated within the vertical assembly.
