The process and arrangement are used to react metals, non- metals and ionizable compounds in the same way as precious metals. This allows high-performance storage batteries and also the production of elements in ultrapure or precisely alloyed form. In these reactions, the electric charges of the ions to be reacted are compensated for by counterions which are not able to form covalent or coordinative bonds with the former. However, there must also be no other components which would react with the ions to be reacted to form adducts of low charge present in the solution. Numerous compounds which bear a charge on a central atom but in which the charge is shielded by indifferent ligands are suitable as counterions for this purpose. Examples to be mentioned are in particular quaternary ammonium and borohydride ions. Preferred solvents for these reactions are substances which form loose coordinative bonds with the ions to be reacted without compensating for charges. IMAGE
