Using coordination compounds containing ruthenium dipiridofenazina as luminescent markers of cell viability. Markers are able to determine cell viability by measuring the intensity, lifetime (kinetic) and / or anisotropy (polarization) of its luminescence and methods to carry out using the same. Such markers belong to the family of ruthenium coordination compounds (II) with ligands poliazaheterocíclicos chelators, in which at least one has in its structure the grouping dipyrido [3,2-a: 2 " ', 3" ''] phenazine. The characteristics of these tracers and their ability to interact with nuclear DNA make usable for example, in flow cytometry techniques and fluorescence microscopy, providing unique advantages of versatility, sensitivity, selectivity and robustness to the process.
