A method for cooling a vertical train of graphite electrodesconnected to each other by using a cooling liquid sprayed ontothe outer periphery surface of a graphite electrode. Thegraphite electrode consists of an upper portion of the graphiteelectrode train that penetrates through a cover enclosing anopening of an electric arc furnace with a vessel for melting andrefining a metal (e.g. steel). The method is accomplished bydirecting the cooling liquid at the upward or downwardinclination of 0 degrees to 60 degrees with respect to thehorizontal and by simultaneously spraying the cooling liquid ata flow rate ranging between 0.8 liters/minute and 40liters/minute.
