METHOD OF OPERATING THE CHANNEL EQUALIZER IN A RECEIVER FOR DTV SIGNALS SUBJECT TO CO-CHANNEL NTSC INTERFERENCE

A DTV signal receiver includes an adaptive channel equalization filter, a combfilter (20) for suppressing artifacts of co-channel NTSC interference, and anintersymbol-interference suppression filter (26) compensating for theintersymbol interference introduced by the comb filter (20). The adaptation ofthe equalization filter coefficients is done so as to be insensitive to thepresence or absence of the artifacts of co-channel NTSC interference. Thisavoids the channel equalization filter attempting to compensate for theintersymbol interference introduced by the comb filter (20), whichcompensation could not be fully accomplished and would make the intersymbolinterference in the comb filter (20) unpredictable. The adaptation of theequalization filter coefficients is done so as not to affect the intersymbolinterference introduced by the comb filter (20). Consequently, the intersymbolinterference can be properly compensated for by the intersymbol-interferencesuppression filter (26).
