The present invention relates primarily to the field of Locksmithing, whereinkey bittings are cutto specific depths so that they will operate only those locks for which theyare intended. It isoften necessary to decode a key to ascertain the depths of its bittings. Thecustomary means ofdecoding employ:1. A flat metal gauge, precut with gaps representing the lock manufacturer'sspecifieddepths.2. A micrometer, the measurements from which being referred to amanufacturer's depthconversion table.3. A propriety device such as HPC's "Pocket Size Decoder Kit", which indicatesdepths bymanufacturer's code.There is a clear need within the Locksmithing industry for an improved meansof decoding keyhitting depths by both manufacturers' code numbers and by direct measurement.The invention herein disclosed provides a practical means of accuratelydetermining key bittingdepths both by manufacturers' codes and by direct measurement.
