The present invention for automatically installing software on a computer. Thesystem includes a build server and build generating station, which may be thesame computer. The build server is connected to a recipient computer via anetwork. The build server includes a library of software that is installableonto a recipient computer. The build generating station includes software forgenerating build plans, the build plans containing instructions for executingsoftware installation programs. The build plans are transferable to arecipient computer, such as through a network or manual transfer of tangiblemedia. The method involves creating a build plan defining software to beinstalled onto a recipient computer, transferring the build plan to therecipient computer, and executing the build plan on the recipient computer,where the recipient computer accesses files and data needed for theinstallation from a build server via a network.
