A system and method are disclosed for creating persistent, bidirectional relationships (425) between software agent (114,134,154, and 174) objects in a computer network (115) of compuer nodes (102 and 192). Each object is a software agent that represents a collaborative workspace. The software agent can represent a project, a person, a group of persons, an event, or a chat session and each of these objects is configured to provide a collaborative workspace. Each collaborative workspace is associated with other collaborative workspaces through reciprocal relationships that are created in respective pairs of the objects.
