The invention relates to a method and to a device for adaptively reducing signal noise. According to said method, a signal that contains undesired noise components in addition to the signal components of interest is, unless it was not already measured in digital form, fed to the input of an analog to digital converter that produces a set of discrete data. Said discrete data are stored, and sets of the stored data are sequentially processed by an adaptive so-called sliding average smoothing filter that produces a reestimated value for every discrete input value. The reestimated value obtained is compared with the corresponding discrete input value and as a result of said comparison said filter is iteratively adjusted so that the difference between the input values and the reestimated values does not exceed a predetermined threshold value. The method according to the invention allows an accurate and reliable reconstruction of the components of interest from a measured noisy signal, especially an electrocardiographic or magnetocardiographic signal.
