An improved magnetostrictive actuator is provided. The actuator includes combinations of magnetostrictive alloy compositions and prestress values to provide improved temperature response for automotive applications, such as fuel injectors, without the need for complex electronic controls. The fuel injector comprising: a body having an inlet port (118), an outlet port and a fuel passageway extending from the inlet port to the outlet port; a metering element (104) disposed proximate the outlet port; a magnetostrictive element (116) is operative contact with the metering element (104), wherein the composition of the magnetostrictive element consists essentially of a Terfenol-D alloy having the formula Tbx Dyl-x Fey, wherein x ranges from about 0.31 to about 0.33 and y ranges from about 1.8 to about 2.2.
