CONTOURABLE SPINAL STAPLE WITH CENTRALIZED AND UNILATERAL PRONGS

A staple for stabilizing the attachment of a vertebral screw and a longitudinal member to the spine. The staple (1) has a plate (2A, 2B) with first (7) and second (8) apertures. All the staple"s legs, prongs, or spikes (3, 4, 5) attached to the underside (6) of the staple (1) are located closer to one particular aperture (7) than the other (8). Preferably, the plate is also "bow-tie" shaped with a groove (11) that separates the wings (9, 10) of the bow-tie. This bow-tie or hour glass shape combined with the groove help the surgeon to more easily conform the plate to the patient"s vertebra.
